Generally, the anchors, mooring lines and connectors make up a mooring system. A mooring line can be chains, fiber ropes, or wire ropes. The mooring system layout depends on the local environmental conditions and the purpose of the offshore unit.

The mooring system for a fish farm consists anchor, anchor chains, ropes and buoys, in addition, several mooring components like shackles, connection plates, chain connection links. These elements need to be assembled together, correctly specified and installed, physically and operationally compatible with each other, and effective in use and maintenance.

The general layout and design of the seaweed farms used by some of the leading seaweed cultivation companies are all based on horizontal cultivation ropes attached to a mooring grid system. Cultivation ropes are typically polypropylene or similar material ropes. The mooring grid system is left in place after ending the harvesting season and may be re-used for several years. The moorings and the mooring grid systems are based on similar layout and components as used for aquaculture fish farms.

Chain provides a strong and economical solution for many mooring and marine applications. In many cases, chain is coupled with fibre chain, sections of chain on a mooring line provide weight and wear resistance where it is most needed, while fibre sections keep weight down and improve the manageability of the system. The chains are always to be mounted in a mooring line via a shackle. The shackle is to be connected to the end link of each chain length.

In all kinds of the chemical fiber and natural fiber ropes, polyester rope is with the best UV resistance. It's owns stable chemical performance, good avrasion and chemical corrosion resistance. It absorbs water and keeps same elongation rate and strength when it's under wet condition. It is widely used in marine mooring and sea farming.

Shackles are used in lifting and static systems as removable links to connect wire chain, chain and other fittings. Screw pin shackles are mainly used for non-permanent applications. Bolt type shackles are preferably used for long terms or permanent applications and in circumstances where the pin of shackle may rotate during loading.
