The rope termination is one of the most highly loaded areas in a mooring system. When a synthetic rope is spliced into an eye, the rope end must transfer load to a shackle, chain, connection plate or another fitting. A reinforced tubular thimble provides a shaped protective interface inside the rope eye. Its tubular structure helps support the splice and separates the rope fibres from direct contact with the adjacent metal connector. For large-diameter mooring ropes and demanding marine applications, the tubular thimble is a good choice.
We recently supplied a batch of reinforced tubular thimbles to a European customer for use with rope-end terminations. The order was intended for project-based marine mooring applications, where protecting the rope eye and creating a compatible connection point were important parts of the assembly requirements.
Mooring systems often use large-diameter synthetic ropes. The termination must provide enough internal space, bearing radius and connection clearance for the selected rope and splice. A reinforced tubular thimble can be considered where the project requires a protected and stable rope eye for a larger rope assembly. And, the tubular form provides a continuous curved surface around the main bearing area of the rope eye. This can help the rope maintain a more stable shape when the termination is connected to a shackle, master link or other fitting.
